“There are times in life, often the most important times, when words just aren’t enough and language simply fails to convey the true depth and breadth of our feelings.” Ali Cockrean is an artist who paints from the heart. Her works are visual expressions of emotional responses to the world around her, to personal experiences and to relationships with other people. Ali’s latest collection of work marks a significant development in style. After two years of dramatic life changes it is probably not surprising that her art has followed suit. Having burst on to the market five years ago with bold statements and rich colours and textures, her new collection is altogether quieter and more reflective. The colour palette has become subtle and muted and the images recognisable as landscapes. Many focus on seascapes, influenced by frequent trips to the Cornish coast. But some things don't change. Ali is still an expressionist painter, preferring to work without any visual props. For her, it is the spirit of the places she visits that she wishes to capture and therefore the essence of this is held in her memory. Ali maintains that “As an artist, my work evolves both from my subconscious and unconscious mind and can’t always be explained. It expresses emotions, feelings, senses. My hope is that I can convey to other people something of the magic and mystery I feel when I visit these places. As an artist one of my greatest joys is the feeling of liberation that comes from painting without restrictions. If people viewing my work can feel that same sense of liberation I’ll have achieved my aim.”
